Daily motivation 36 – be prepared

Seems like common sense, but we don’t always follow through. I’m not very good at being well prepared – I forget to charge my MP3 player before long journeys. I don’t bring books to places I know I’ll be waiting to help pass the time. I tend to not plan my meals so when I shop it’s horribly cost inefficient, and since I never decide what I’m wearing until moments before I get dressed I often look for clothes that I forget I’ve already worn.

But a little preparation can really help, whether it’s ways to save money by making plans for what to buy in advance or some research on a meeting or interview before you attend. I practice things I’d like to say to people sometimes before an important conversation, such as during a doctor’s appointment, so that I don’t forget what I need to tell them. It’s also a good way to battle nerves, because when you rehearse and prepare it makes you more confident and can help you get ready for a situation that scares you or makes you uncomfortable, like a presentation.

There are loads of little ways in life we can prepare for what’s ahead, even when we don’t know what to expect. It can help us meet the day ahead with solidarity, and a knowledge that you are ready for what you’re up against next.

Approaching the new year…

Because, no, I don’t believe it’s all going to be over in two weeks.

New Year’s Day 2012 was when I started this blog with my first ever resolutions post. This year I’m not going to do the same. I’ve been looking at consistant, gradual self-improvement for such a long time that making a goalpost out of a date like that just doesn’t seem to fit.

However, I am going to mark 2013 by doing something else.

I’m going to write a post in the next few days about things I’m going to buy myself after Christmas if nobody else does, and one of those things is a set of decent digital weighing scales for my bathroom. Admittedly I do have access to weighing scales in another part of the building I live in, but I’m a big believer in consistency. Anyy weigh-a-holic will tell you it’s always best to weigh yourself first thing in the morning, after bathroom and before breakfast in your birthday suit.

Now, call me crazy, but I’m not exactly keen on the idea of stripping down in the nurses office where a room full of staff members can see my arse on the security cameras. I doubt they’d be impressed, and not just because of my curvacious figure perhaps not looking its best right now. And non-digital scales are a pain to read withough glasses on – after all, glasses have a weight! They need removing also! And it’s not the first time I’ve bonked my head on a friend’s sink while balancing with my arse in the air counting lines and trying to do maths sums way too complicated for first thing in the morning.

So, as of New Year’s Eve (because that’s a Monday, and any excuse to liven those up is a plus) I will be hoping to weigh myself first thing in the morning. I will also do something I’ve never done before – measurements (such as waist, hips, etc.). I’m going to research the ones that matter and keep track, so that I am aware of the more subtle decrease in size.

As of yet I don’t have a specific “work out” plan or dietary concept in mind for next year – frankly I prefer it that way. I’m going to take each day as it comes.

Wish me luck,

Kirsty
