This is a wonderful sentiment I first hit upon a while ago, but I love the way Levo League injects some fun into the idea in their article about making time for yourself. Admittedly, as Levo League is a website for female professionals, this is worded with a more female slant… but it works both ways:
The girl you were yesterday is not the woman you are today. It’s time to get to know her (you), because she will either be your worst enemy or your greatest ally.
It’s true – YOU are the only you that life is going to give you. I used to be a lot of things – quiet, shy, reserved, unsure of myself, lacking self-confidence, disliking myself, how I looked, what I wore… You know what? It’s exhausting!
Nobody can change who you are except you. There’s no barrier in life stopping you from being who you want except yourself. But the first step towards any amount of change is acceptance.
Accept who you are. You’re not perfect; you’re flawed and damaged and you’re going to mess up. But everybody does – you’re also somebody’s little miracle. You’re a blessing on the world, and you can make a difference. Even if it’s just to the people you know. Learn to love the time you spend alone, rewarding yourself with what ever makes you happy. Life’s about the journey, not the destination, and the best companion you can ever have for that journey is YOU.
So get out there and enjoy being you.
